Moderator is a WordPress Plugin and associated desktop application, built using Adobe AIR, that allows you to view and moderate comments from your desktop. Some of the features of this early release of the application include:
- Viewing unmoderated comments.
- Dock and system tray notifications of the number of unmoderated comments.
- Accept, delete, and spam comments from within the desktop client.
- Close application window, or minimize it to the system tray while running.
- Shows the Gravatar icons for the user who posted the comment.
This is an early release of the application. As such, there are probably bugs and other issues that you may run into. Also, this is by no means feature complete (see ‘Roadmap’ below).
All feature requests and bug reports should be emailed to me at wpmoderator@gmail.com. This will help me keep them organized for the time being. Any other correspondence related to this application can be emailed to me at daniel.dura@gmail.com
Requirements
Moderator currently requires version 2.6+ of WordPress be installed. Also, you will need Adobe AIR 1.1, which runs on Mac, Windows, and is currently in beta on Linux.
Installation
- Download the current plugin bundle from here. (moderator_plugin.zip | 72KB)
- Unzip the contents of the archive and place them in your WordPress install directory under {wordpress install}/wp-content/plugins. You should now have a directory called ‘moderator’ in the plugins folder.
- Login to your administration panel, and go to the Plugins page. Activate the Moderator plugin by clicking on the ‘Activate’ link in the entry for this plugin.
- Now that the plugin is activated, go to the Settings tab and select the Moderator admin page. Follow the instructions on that page to install the desktop client.
Please note, that if you have more than a few hundred comments awaiting moderation (this does not count spam,) you may see some performance issues when using this application. This should be fixed in the next version.
Roadmap
Again, this is an early release. While the near term will be focused on application polish and fixing bugs, some features will be added soon and include replying to comments, viewing unmoderated comments from multiple blogs, and popup alerts to notify of incoming comments.
I will also modify the theme of the application to more closely align with the theme of the WordPress administrator. Also, as soon as 2.7 is release, this application will support the comment moderation methods that will be included. That should eliminate the need to even install the WordPress plugin. All that would be needed would be the desktop client itself.
Great idea !
I wish someone could do that for Drupal…
Daniel, Just discovered this AIR app via RefreshingApps. Setup was a breeze. I don’t get a lot of comments on my site, but this shows a lot of promise. Nice work! If I find any bugs, I will definitely let you know.
Hey Danny,
Great work – have been waiting for you to post this up – works like a charm. Love the logo too – clever. 😉
can not display chinese character.
Is Adobe AIR free?
@Cornflake Yes, Adobe AIR is 100% free.
I was going to mention that we’ve got XML-RPC comment management methods in -trunk (the upcoming 2.7 release), but you already mentioned it at the end of the post. We’ve got an email list for XML-RPC development email list that you may find helpful:
http://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-xmlrpc
I’ve been encouraging all developers interested in XML-RPC in WordPress to join the list. We’d love to have you join the discussion there.
@Joseph – Yeah, I am hoping to start working on integrating the changes to use those new XML-RPC methods soon. It will be nice when I don’t have to require a plugin anymore and all you have to download is the client! I will head over to the mailing list, I didn’t even realize it exists, thanks!
it’s great, but i wish there was an app that showed all comments and the ability to reply from it.
Want to try this one.
I’ll be back for the review.
Great application, now I can delete the spams without having to logon wordpress!
Support for multiple blogs will be a great feature 🙂
I’ve tried it and it’s work on me. Thanks a lot. And I hope you wouldn’t be mind if I wrote this installation tutorial in my mother language ( Indonesian ) on my blog. Thank you very much.
It’s cool. Adobe Air is a merging tech platform we need to pay attention.
i installed
This is a kick-ass application! Just love it!
1000 kudos for your great work!
Great plugin. I could never think of this kind of plugin and tool…
Thanks… I will try to spread the word.
Very nice work!
This looks very interesting. I will be looking more closely at it later today. One quick question, can the “application” monitor multiple blogs? If yes, then I would consider this a must have.
@JellyBeen Right now it does not monitor multiple blogs, but this is very high on the priority list of feature requests. More than likely, that feature will coincide with the WordPress 2.7 release.
Great, I love it so much.
You can look here for functionality
http://blogclient.ru/downloads , first link wpcommentclientsetup.exe, it’s Russian Comment Client (windows application and plugin) – not so pretty like yours, but works with multiple blogs, allow black and white list management, allow you to write comments on sites have this plugin installed.
English and Russian interface and no English documentation.
Looks really useful, good work Daniel. I’ll especially look forward when the support for multiple blogs is added 🙂
A great tool. I wish to see more of these admin tools which would ease the pain for people who are at their computers for the most part.
Hi there, nice work – I’d recommend continuing down the black route design wise – the OSX HUD aesthetic works really well for small apps like yours… and the WP backend isn’t exactly the best looking thing in the world!
Cheers.
This would be muy excellent as a Windows Gadget
sweet thanks, this is awesome plugin.
will you add gravatar support?
@ChaosKaizer It’s your luck day! There is already Gravatar support in the application. You can turn it on and off in the settings panel.
Its great! Thank you for this nix plugin!
Ilka
It’s useful for me
Keep up the good work !
Any chance of adding the ability to reply to comments from the app?
Hello there! Deeply thank you for this useful plugin. I’ve just installed it and haven’t got any problems in using it, even if it’s a beta. I personally think you should keep on developing such kind of applications, not just for the WordPress, but think of some websites from the Social Networking area, there you could do a great job. As for me, the one for WordPress is enough, I get a lot of comments and spam from different websites, you know… automated content.
Let me know if it’s okay if I can write a short review about your plugin, since I want to start telling people about the Adobe AIR, I guess this is a good start to tell my readers about, it’s a simple and effective application, but that doesn’t mean I do not appreciate your work, from the contrary, I shall look for more right now.
Kindly yours,
Dorian
@iGraphiX Please feel free to write a review of the plugin! You can even use the image that you see on the top of this post, if you like.
quite possibly the best wordpress plugin EVER. great work, man!
One question: is there any way to make it so we can moderate comments for more than one blog at a time, instead of having to log in and log out of each blog, in the next update? That would just rock.
Nice application, congratulations.
Great plugin!
Just think about the possibility of answering the comment straight from the AIR interface…
Interesting work. I have full featured application under Windows, please see:
http://commentclient.com/
It would have been great if it was possible to reply to a comment right from the app.. but 2 my dismay de feature isn’t available 😦
nice work. i will definitely install this in my next blog and give it a try. if i find any bugs i’ll mail you.
looking forward to the integration with 2.7’s comment XML RPC!
Awesome! Now only if I had that kind of comment traffic to warrant using it.
I would love a free application like this for writing posts and pages too 🙂
Fantastic piece of software, oh how I love Air!
Thanks for moderator app
Thank you, great application.
Great Application
Что то никак не получается настроить эту утилиту. ктото может помочь?
Great Plugin. I will give it a test. Is it compatible to wp 2.7?
It is compatible with 2.7. I will also be releasing a new version very soon that won’t require the plugin. All you will have to do is install the AIR application and it will work with 2.7s new comment moderation API that comes installed with WordPress.
Any plans to allow you to moderate comments on two different wordpress sites?
Any update on the new version?
Thanks,jb
Great Plugin. Tks!
I don´t seem to be able to delete comments, but the even only been able to aprove is awesome.
Maybe because I´m using wordpress 2.9.1?
Wonderful application and concept, I am amazed, why didn’t I found you earlier. Unfortunately, I am having some trouble in deleting comments. Any ideas?
Nice and useful post.
